Like many insiders have predicted, the contract negotiations between General Motors and the United Auto workers failed resulting in the first national strike of the GM plant employees since 1970. strike was caused by the conflict between the need for GM CEO Rick Wagoner to reduce labor and health costs, and the goal of the UAW president Ron Gettelfinger protect the pay and benefits of 73,000 members the union at GM US plants. -Continued after the jump
