Audi confirmed that the Volkswagen Group has killed the ambitious development of its 420 hp four-cylinder engine.
In 2014, the German brand previewed its powerful 2.0-liter in the TT Quattro Sport Concept and initially it was thought that the engine went into production alongside 2.5-liter five-cylinder Audi existing.

The engine itself was designed by Friedrich Eichler, the same man responsible for the powerful AMG 2.0-liter turbo drive models A45 and CLA45 GLA45. Because of its size, it had the potential to be mounted in a wide range of Audi models, by providing impressive levels of performance.
However, the Volkswagen Group finally decided it was best for Audi to develop its existing five-cylinder.
According to Reil, the turbo'd four would have been more costly to design the five-pot. He also suggested that the five-cylinder has more character, saying that if the company has developed the EA888, it would have been "only a four-cylinder engine."
Although it would have been cool to see such a production range of the engine, five-cylinder Audi has the potential for even more power and remains a unique proposition in the market for performance cars.
