BMW has announced a new comprehensive motorsports program. Not only the German manufacturer continue its ongoing activities, but it will also launch two new.
Arguably chief among them will be the return of the brand to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following his victory in the general classification with the V12 LMR in 1999 and its competition in the LM GTE as recently as 2011, the Bavarian automaker will play the whole of the FIA World Endurance Championship, including Event principal in western France, from 2018.
BMW has yet to detail what the new endurance program will entail. But we expect it launch an improved version of its M6 GT3 in the GTE class (formerly known as GT2).
With the WEC effort Munich also announced intensified its participation in the FIA Formula E Championship. That will come first in the form of a partnership with the Andretti team, but could turn into a full entry works just the fifth season in 2018-19.
At the same time, BMW has renewed its commitment to its current efforts in DTM, the championship IMSA SportsCar WeatherTech, and the partnership with Mini Team X-Raid Dakar. In all, it promises to be the most complete racing program of the company since the withdrawal from Formula One there are seven.
