a new record lap time has been displayed in a Ford GT at the Nürburgring this weekend. But before you get too excited, it should be noted that it was not the new GT, it was certainly not street-legal, and it was not strictly clocked on the Nordschleife.
The time of 7: 58.558 was posted by Nico Verdonck, driving an example in the previous race-prepped Ford GT (with the old supercharged V8, not the new turbo six) in the race VLN. The Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring series is an endurance championship that only participates in the Ring.
Now you may think that the time Verdonck is a full minute slower than supercars of the current route as the Porsche 918 Spyder and Lamborghini Aventador SV succeeded. But when those times were published only on the Nordschleife 20.8 km (12.9 mile) Verdonck knees jostled around a combined layout of both the Nordschleife and part of the Grand Prix circuit for a total distance of 24.4 kilometers (or 15 miles).
This works proportionally faster than any road-going supercar has accelerated around the Nordschleife, and faster than any previously lapped 24.4 kilometers combined track - if only half a second.
