engines usually come with a number pair of cylinders, but someone apparently forgot to tell that to the engineers at Audi forty years ago. It's been so long since the German automaker introduced its first engine five-cylinder, and four decades later, it's still making them.

first five-pot society launched in 1976 Audi 100, positioned above its engine four-cylinder existing but more compact in form and the six largest. It displaced 2.1 litres and developing 136 horses only.

over the last forty years, Audi has introduced fuel injection, four-valve heads, turbochargers and even the diesel to its range of engine variants five cylinders. It is won Rally, circuit racing and race on the Nürburgring along the way. And now, it produces as much as 400 horses in the last TT RS - nearly three times more expensive than the original.

If this isn't enough to convince you that the design of five-cylinder is a winner for Audi, consider that the plant won the International engine of the year in his category seven times now, dominating every year since 2010.

to mark the anniversary, the Audi Forum in Neckersulm opened an exhibition featuring its engine five-cylinder over the years. But if your travel plans will not be take in Germany by 6 November (when the exhibition closes it), you can always take a drive through history in the gallery below.
