"In France, we have long favored the diesel engine. It was a mistake, and we will gradually undo it, intelligently and pragmatically," Valls was quoted as saying by Reuters . The plans are bold a political point of view, considering that about 80 percent of French motorists are driving diesel cars.
Valls said taxation should be changed so that citizens towards more environmentally friendly choices. A first step is the budget 2015 of the State which includes measures to reduce the tax advantage of diesel fuel compared to gas.
The government says it will increase the excise tax (TICPE) on diesel by 2 cents per liter, a surcharge of € 807 million of budget revenues in 2015. other measures include a bonus of up to € 10,000 for scraping drivers diesel cars to electric vehicles.
Obviously, French manufacturers are against the plans. PSA and Renault both said the increase in tax on diesel fuel will not improve the air quality, arguing that the tax does not distinguish between modern diesel engines and more. PSA also said the tax will hurt its competitiveness.
"Diesel is a key technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fight against climate change. This measure will place France at a disadvantage compared to Germany," a spokesman PSA said Autonews Europe.
