Mercedes DiesOtto Engine: 238Hp 1.8-liter gasoline unit with Fuel Economy of A Diesel

the result is a unit of four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged to a displacement of only 1.8 liters with a power of 238 HP and a maximum torque of 400 Nm both with an average consumption of less than 6 liters of fuel per 100 km (39.2 mi/gal) of fuel in a... Mercedes-Benz presents the future of the gasoline engine: DiesOtto - engine gas with diesel genes
Stuttgart - the performance of a gasoline engine , the high torque and fuel economy of a State-of-the-art diesel and extremely clean emissions: Mercedes-Benz has combined all the advantages of both engine types in its DiesOtto powertrain. The new technology package, which represents the future of the gasoline engine, includes features such as direct injection of gas, turbocharger and a variable compression. At the heart of this innovation is controlled self-ignition, a process similar to that of a diesel very efficient combustion. Through another advantage and unlike comparable developments, the Mercedes system requires no synthetic fuel, but can be operated with gasoline.
internal combustion engine optimization is one of the milestones on the Mercedes-Benz roadmap for sustainable mobility. BLUETEC has already enabled Mercedes engineers to make powerful and economical diesel as clean as the engine gasoline. The
"our next goal will now be done as economical as a diesel engine gasoline." All the prerequisites for this are provided by our DiesOtto concept, which includes the main assets of the gasoline engine and diesel engine,"said Prof. Dr. Herbert Kohler, head of Group research & Advanced Engineering vehicle and Powertrain; Director DaimlerChrysler environment.
the result of this 'marriage' is a unit of four cylinders of an engine capacity of only 1.8 liters, which combines the strengths of the petrol engine emissions with fuel efficiency of a diesel engine. Despite its movement reduced - downsizing is one of the key factors to achieve lower fuel consumption - this compact power supply offers superior performance with refinement at the level of the luxury class. An output of 175 kW/238 horses and a maximum torque of 400 newton metres are realized together with the hybridization, a fuel consumption of less than six litres of petrol per 100 kilometres. This figure is in no way a car small or compact, but to a vehicle the size of the S-class underway, with the level of comfort and security that is typical of a Mercedes.
Mercedes-Benz DiesOtto - a further development of the engine ignition candle
"in line with the worldwide success of today's diesel engines, vehicles with gasoline engines will continue to have an attraction for many clients and many markets long-term. As a result, we give our attention to two engine types, including a full hybrid option for diesel and gasoline vehicles,"said Prof. Kohler. Mercedes-Benz works on its corresponding insisting DiesOtto concept. Its main technical features are the following:
- downsizing fewer cylinders and a smaller displacement
- turbocharging for superior performance
- Direct injection gasoline as another measure of fuel
- controlled auto-ignition , a combustion process similar to that of a diesel
- Variable valve control
- a variable compression ratio, leading to a better fuel economy and, depending on the needs of the customer and the type of operation,
- A module hybrid with an integrated starter/alternator which makes the training even more economical.
during start-up and at full load, the fuel/air mixture is ignited by a candle, as in a conventional ignition (homogeneous combustion) engine. Controlled self-ignition which the DiesOtto returns automatically to its work cycle occurs in partial load conditions, i.e. at low and medium engine speed.
the resulting emissions of nitrogen oxide low of homogeneous combustion at temperatures of reduced reaction. All other emissions control in engine DiesOtto is through a standard three-way catalyst. A system of management and control of highly efficient engine was also produced to combine the individual subsystems into a concept car.
the current Outlook for the future of the internal combustion engine reveal its great potential and show that the new concept car is a feasible proposal in the medium term. Some of the formed intermediate solutions, for example, direct fuel injection are already in production in series at Mercedes-Benz. Others will be gradually integrated in the series-production engines until the overall solution has been achieved.
